First Grade
As we continued to talk about colors, the first graders read My Many Colored Days by Dr. Seuss and discussed how different colors can show different feelings. Then we looked at art made by Rothko, a modern artist who made abstract art that shows feelings using color. Using chalk pastels we made our own Rothko-inspired abstract art with either warm or cool colors.
Presenting: High Fashion Pins
In order to practice identifying warm and cool colors, the first graders created sculptural pins out of a variety of supplies. We were inspired by high fashion examples and ritualistic jewelry from South Asian cultures. We asked questions to better understand each design such as: where would you wear this? would you buy this? And what do you think it is made of?

The first grade classes worked with Ms. Beaird to explore 3D shapes with clay and build our houses. The students had been learning about their community and their neighborhood with their homeroom teachers as well as 2D and 3D shapes in math. We made houses out of Model Magic clay and painted them. They put them on yards and added them to the class neighborhood.
Presenting: Stained Glass Windows
The first grade students learned about Stained Glass windows throughout history including Louis Comfort Tiffany. Stained glass windows are special because they use pictures to tell a story. We worked with transparency sheets, tissue paper, sharpie and modge podge to make some beautiful windows. They definitely brighten up the classroom!

Presenting: Jasper Johns Symbols
The first grade students looked at different examples of symbols such as emojis, super hero symbols and traffic signs. Artists such as Jasper Johns painted these universal symbols. We discussed their specific shapes and made sketches of some ideas of symbols from our daily lives. Then we made our own symbols using textures from found objects (just like Jasper Johns!), paint, and paper plates.

The First Grade students have been working on creating symbols like Jasper Johns. The first drew three different ideas and then used texture and paint to add details. 9/18
Mrs. Lowhorn's class practiced their tracing skills and careful coloring as they turned themselves into mermaids and pirates.
